Winners' Circle: Krista Tressa

July 31, 2020

Welcome to the Winners' Circle where we celebrate the success of our ICL students. Today we are celebrating published author Krista Tressa!

What is the title of your article? Who is the publisher?

My article is called "The Prescription." The publisher is Cadet Quest.

Give us a short summary of your article.

In summary, "The Prescription" is a Christian based fictional story. Have you ever wondered what it's like to step into the shoes of a bully? Riley is a Christian teenager who is bullying others in order to medicate his own emotional pain. The product of divorce, he struggles with poor self-esteem. He attends summer camp, and through prayer, comes to the realization that he has a choice to make. Which prescription is he going to take to ease his pain?

Tell us a bit about your path to publishing, from idea to submission to published book.

I wrote this 1200 word article/story for my #2 assignment during my Writing for Children and Teens course back in the fall of 2017. I revised it several times and ended up changing the protagonist from a girl to a boy in order to fit the submission criteria for Cadet Quest. I had received many rejection letters from various publishers. The good news is that I didn't give up! I knew that I had great stories to share and it was just a matter of time before somebody else realized it too.

How long have you been writing?

Since August of 2017.

What's your favorite genre to write and why?
Christian-based fiction.

What ICL courses have your taken?
Writing for Children and Teens

How has taking our course helped your writing and/or career?

My editor was awesome! She gave me direction and encouragement. I learned so much during the year-long course. Writing and publishing was something on my bucket list that I finally decided to check off!  Thank you for your help ICL!

Have any of your class assignments been published?

Yes! Cadet Quest is publishing my article, "The Prescription" in their Sept/Oct edition.

Do you have a favorite writing tip you'd like to share?

Be willing to write and re-write! Study what publishers are looking for...this saves you time and effort!

If you could travel back in time and give yourself one piece of writing advice, how far back would you go, and what would you tell yourself?

I would say...check off your bucket list items sooner than later...don't wait until is short.

Please tell us the best or most valuable thing you learned from your experience with ICL.

The ICL course that I took challenged me to try new writing techniques. It took me out of my comfort zone...but in a good way.

Does your mindset and attitude matter?

Yes! Don't give up! Stay positive! What you have to share with the world matters!
