Winners' Circle - Annette Miller

March 22, 2019

Welcome to the Winner's Circle where we celebrate the success of our ICL students. Today we are celebrating published author Annette Miller!

What are the names of your books? Who is the publisher?
Night Angel, Bedeviled Angel, An Angel's Heart, and www.cupid. My publisher is The Wild Rose Press.

Tell us a bit about your path to publishing, from idea to submission to published book.
I knew the story I wanted to tell but didn't know the craft of writing. After numerous rejections, I knew I needed help. I got a flyer for ICL and taking the courses helped me fix my technical problems. In Nov 2013, I signed my first contract.

How long have you been writing?
I’ve been writing since I was little. I seriously started writing in 2000.

What's your favorite genre to write and why?

Paranormal romance because I love the fantasy of it all.

What ICL courses have your taken?

Writing for Children and Teens, Beyond the Basics, Writing and Selling Children's Books, Breaking Into Print, and Write, Shape, and Sell your Novel.

How has taking our course helped your writing and/or career?
These courses showed me how to show not tell, what mistakes to look for in my writing, how to write a query letter and a cover letter, and listed the different publications to check to see who is accepting submissions.

Have any of your class assignments been published? If so, where and when?

My last assignment, Night Angel, was the first book I had published. The Wild Rose Press signed me to a contract in Nov 2013.

Do you have a favorite writing tip you'd like to share?
Learn all you can about the craft. Know your genre and know your audience. Find a critique partner who will help you find the weak spots in your story. Join a writers group. Their support is invaluable.

If you could travel back in time and give yourself one piece of writing advice, how far back would you go, and what would you tell yourself?

Have more confidence in yourself and your stories. Take writing courses in college and get into the market early.

Please tell us the best or most valuable thing you learned from your experience with ICL.
These courses helped me look at my work with a more critical eye to find the areas that need more revision. Every course I took taught me something new. They made me have a set amount of time every day to write. It may be in the morning or it may be at night. The most important thing I learned was to "put my butt in the chair and write."

Did you ever feel you weren’t talented enough to be a published author?
Never. I knew I’d get there one day, no matter how long it took. Two of my books have finaled in two different contests. You don't need any special talent to write but it does take hard work and skill and a willingness to learn. I only have a high school degree. The only college I attended was ICL. All you need is a passion for the craft. Everything else you can learn over time.

Annette Miller is originally from Baltimore, MD. Wanting to travel, she married an Air Force man and has two boys. Now living in TN, she combined her love of romance and superheroes, and her Angel Haven series was born.
