No. Both IFW Signature courses assume no prior training or experience, beginning with writing basics and progressing to the more advanced techniques. Our coursework is designed to develop skills through mastery of writing techniques in straightforward, carefully planned assignments.

One of the advantages in taking an IFW course is that you are able to work at your own pace. While students on average complete their writing course in 18 months, your tuition covers up to 2 years to complete your course.

IFW has been in continuous operation for over 50 years, providing time-tested, one-on-one writing instruction to almost 500,000 students. We believe our record speaks for itself and encourage you to read success stories at our Winner’s Circle.

Institute For Writers offers a variety of writing courses. To learn more, please click on IFW Writing Courses (can we create a page that this goes to that has the overview of the Writing Courses?)  Writing is one thing, teaching is another. Our one-on-one method of instruction from published writers and professional editors provide the opportunity for you to achieve your writing goals.

Each writing course offers specific materials based on the course objectives. To see what materials are offered, simply go to the course tab, choose the course you are interested in and then click on the Materials tab.

Student Life

That’s easy! The flexibility and freedom our courses provide allow you to complete assignments at your convenience, at your own pace, and from your own home.

Upon completion of the enrollment process, you will be emailed detailed instructions on how to log in to your student account. If you do not see it in your inbox, check your junk email. And remember to add us to your approved email list to ensure you receive all of our communications.

All assignments are evaluated by your instructor. Upon completion of each assignment, you submit it in our Online Student Center. We require everything be submitted in Microsoft Word, which is the standard software used in the publishing industry.  All assignments are graded Pass/Fail and results are emailed back to you from your instructor. For grading policies, please see the Academic Info (will we have this page and if so, please link to it?) page.

In order to graduate, a student must maintain a passing average, satisfactorily complete all course assignments, and fulfill their financial obligations to the Institute.

Yes, all of the resources in the Online Student Center are available to our graduates.

Upon successful completion of all course requirements, the student will be mailed their diploma and an official transcript.

Institute For Writers graduates receive an official transcript with their graduation package. Additional transcripts are also available for a nominal fee. Please contact Student Services with your request.

The Connecticut Board for State Academic Awards recommends that students who complete our courses be awarded college credits. You may obtain credits for the courses you’ve completed through Charter Oak State College since they officially accredit our programs. There is a fee for a credit registry account, currently $850, which you would first need to open in order to receive official transcripts with credit hours for the course. Please contact Charter Oak at (860) 515-3702 to obtain more information on fees and with any questions about the registry.

Once the credit registry account is opened, follow up with us to send Charter Oak a copy of your transcripts for $7 each and Charter Oak will then issue transcripts with credit hours to your college, university, institution, or district of choice; it is up to these organizations if and how they can accept the credits.
